Chapter 16 — Architecture

A being that still can't see itself in others, that still believes it can thrive on someone else's suffering, that still sorts the world into superior and inferior — will naturally create an image of God in its own likeness.

A separate God. Distant. Watching from outside and judging. With favorites — a chosen people, a one true religion. Punishing those who disobey and rewarding those who please.

That conception isn't a moral failing. It's a limitation of reach. You can only conceive of what you've already experienced.

And whoever has never felt, even for an instant, the dissolving of the boundary between self and other — can only imagine a God who also lives apart from everything.
